Stain Index: How to Remove Almost Anything

This site is absolutely wonderful! From lipstick to whiteout... to silly putty to mildew, the "Stain Index" has a solution.

The Top 21 Holiday, Party, and Everyday Stains…and how to remove them.

Dear Readers,

Welcome to the twenty-second issue of Auction Moms!

At last…spring selling season is ALMOST here! It’s been a rough couple of months for those who sell children’s clothes. Right about now I usually get really excited – Christmas is in full swing, and right after that special day, we launch right into some really *sweet* selling time.

On a different note, I’m SO excited; my husband and I are leaving for a 5-day trip to our favorite resort (Eagle crest) in Bend, OR ~ we’ll be gone from the 10th-14th. Our 6th anniversary and my 27th birthday were in November, but I was still pretty sick from the pregnancy, so we decided to wait until December to celebrate.

Imagine…4 whole nights without getting up at least once at 2am, no peanut butter sandwiches to make, no bottles to prepare…no DIAPERS to change! I am so thrilled; I’ll let you know how it goes!

Have a wonderful Merry Christmas…I’ll see you on the 26th!

Getting Ready For The Excitement: Spring Selling!

It’s that time of year again! This is my absolute favorite selling season ~ a fresh start in the New Year, and finally seeing GREEN.

Excitement is in the air!

On the Yahoo Groups for Gymboree and other name brands, “In Search Of” posts will start appearing, auctions will start doing much better, and as a result THOSE sellers will start bidding on your auctions because now they have money, etc. The selling/buying circle starts going moving again…don’t you just love it? It is the funnest time of the year for selling.

(Note: You can learn about the Yahoo Groups in the 14th archived issue…it’s a valuable and fun tool for sellers.)
www.auction-moms.com/newsletter/1-14.html

There are some important steps I want to share with you about preparing for the spring season. This is a busy time of year with the holidays, and it’s easy to forget about selling until after the New Year, but you’ll need to do some preparation so you can start selling when the prices are good.

1. When should I start selling for spring?
2. What exactly should I sell?
3. Organizing Your Inventory
4. Cross-Selling: This Method WORKS!!

1. When should I start selling for spring?

I’ve seen many sellers start as early as the day after Christmas, but with the holidays and traveling/family time, it’s better to wait until the New Year is over.

Once January 5 arrives, hit the ground running! Usually I recommend you start the day after New Years, but this year that day lands on a Friday, so probably a lot of people will still be traveling through the weekend.

Having the kids go back to school (on the 5th, Monday) is the key, because that is when you know moms are back into their daily routine, able to surf for clothes, etc.

2. What exactly should I sell?

You can sell pretty much everything having to do with spring and summer right from the beginning, with a few exceptions. Sell Valentine’s right away, but wait on the Easter holiday clothes until February. Also swimsuits & their accessories will probably sell better in February, but pretty much everything else you can sell immediately.

Lighter weight pants are still good sellers, since springtime tends to be cool on a lot of days, and light sweaters (especially cardigan style) are perfect for spring.

A good rule of thumb for this (especially Gymboree) is to sell it during the same season as when sold in the stores. For example, Gymboree Spring Blossoms came out in stores January of 2002, and it had long sleeved pieces because obviously it was still freezing outside. You can still sell these pieces in the spring, because they are all lightweight, including the leggings and the light sweaters.

You can see a list of all the lines with pictures and the year they were sold at Gymboree here:
www.gymbohaven.com

Still keep the swimsuits from this line, goggles, swim bags, and other accessories until February; they’re more likely to sell at a higher price in late Feb-April than in January.

3. Organizing Your Inventory

This is an important step I see a lot of sellers overlook. It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of selling, and just take the best clothes and put them on Ebay first.

It is so much better to be organized here! You’ll find yourself breathing a lot easier if you follow a few simple steps.

Here is what I do:

First, I bring all the boxes into my living room. Throughout the year I am always going to the different consignment stores around town, and buying steals as I come across them. I put all the spring/summer stuff together, and the fall/winter clothes together. So when the season comes around, I dig out all the boxes labeled “Spring/Summer”.

Next I start making piles. As I empty each box, I pile it neatly in the size/sex category ~ making sure to put outfits together as I come to them. For instance, all around the room on the couches, chairs, etc will be piles of girls 0-3, 3-6, 6-12, 12-18, and on up. I also try to put the same size shoes with their corresponding size (girls toddler 8 shoes with 4T clothes, for instance)

It’s a mess, believe me. (grin!) But SO fun, because you can just SEE the potential here, wondering what they will all sell for, and excited to get started.

Once they’re organized into piles, the empty boxes are put to use. I put the clothing back in, only this time, each box gets a size and is labeled accordingly.

Now you’re ready to sell, starting wherever you’d like. I usually start at the top or the bottom, either 0-3 or at my largest size and work my way down. As I buy more inventory for spring, I’ll stick it in the box it’s sized at, ready to be sold.

(Side note: you can also just have boxes for each size throughout the year, but I love going through everything at the beginning of the season.)

4. Cross-Selling: This Method WORKS!!! You’ll be astonished!

This is the BEST part of why it’s so important to organize your inventory by size. Time and again, this method brings me multiple bids, as well as setting my auctions on fire with bidding wars...which we can all use, LOL!

This WILL bring you more bids. Guaranteed. I have been doing very well using this technique.

So…what’s the technique? Okay, here goes:

Say for example you are selling a Deux par Deux girl’s dress, size 2T. Instead of saying, "I will be listing many other auctions this week!" add something to this effect:

"Click Here to see lots of girl's size 2T I am listing this week ~ combine winnings to save on shipping!"

Use this html code (copy/paste it, inserting your auction link). Please note that there is NOT supposed to be a space between the "<" and the "a" in the beginning:

< a href="YOUR AUCTION URL HERE">Click Here to see lots of girl's size 2T I am listing this week ~ combine winnings to save on shipping!"

If html totally confuses you, feel free to email me here with your question and I’ll be happy to help you out.

As a bidder who this summer was buying the Gymboree Butterflies line for my daughter on Ebay, if someone said they had other Butterflies in size Medium for sale, I would have clicked over in a heartbeat because I love saving on shipping.

But if they didn't say that, chances are I probably wouldn't look at their other auctions. This is one of THE least used techniques, and it actually yields very high results.

So...how exactly does this create bidding wars?

Here’s an example:

Susan is looking for size 2T spring clothes for her daughter, especially the Deux par Deux brand. She finds your auction through a search for “Deux par Deux.” She decides to “watch” your auction, and is about to go back to her search, when she sees that link to “Click Here”.

She would love to buy more than one outfit from you and save on shipping, especially if all your stuff is as cute as the dress. Oh wow!! She sees FIVE auctions she would love! She immediately puts those on her watch list too.

Fast forward to the ending night. The auctions all have ½ hour to go, and she is now the top bidder on all five. (Already you’ve gotten bids on five more auctions just because of that little sentence telling her to look at more auctions)

Oh NO! Someone else has just outbid her on three of the auctions! Okay, she says, I’ll wait until 10 minutes to go, and then I’ll bid on them again.

And she does…

But meanwhile, another bidder “Mary” is also bidding on these auctions for the same reason: she loves several of the auctions and they’re the size 2T she is looking for. She’s anxious to save on shipping as well, by buying from one seller.

So back and forth it goes, with a bidding war that started all because you put that little “Click Here” sentence in all of your size 2T clothing auctions. It works!

This is the funnest part of the beginning of the season, because usually you will have a lot of clothes to work with. I would love to hear back from you on this, let me know how it works for you!

Update: On January 12th I received this email from one of my readers, Leslie Loftus ~ Ebay seller ID gardeningismypassion:

I have to tell you, I am ABSOLUTELY FLOORED at the prices some of my auctions closed at tonight. Unbelieveable! One person paid over $16 for Gymboree Fruit Punch hair clips~! My auctions aren't usually that spectacular. I used your cross selling technique and the link you gave me and I think I got much better results. Thanks so much!

I have a funny one for you, Sherah; I hope you get as much of a kick out of it as we did.

I am always telling my kids that if they don't keep their toys picked up I am going to sell them on eBay...that is the big joke in our house.

The other day my three year old did something I didn't approve of, I don't even remember now what it was. She looked at me with big, sad eyes and said, "Please don't sell me on eBay, Momma!"

My husband and I just rolled!!!

Sherah: "Welcome to the Auction Moms Newsletter, Diane! Thank you so much for being with us today."

1) To start with, can you tell us how long you’ve been selling on eBay, and what you sell?

I’ve been an eBay seller since April 2002. I got the selling fever going at first by auctioning my perfectionist husband’s “mint” toys from the 1950’s and 60’s. Over time I sold many other family vintage items and great finds. I resell much of my Vera Bradley handbags and accessories. For most of this year I have concentrated on selling NWT baby and children’s clothing from Gap and Gymboree. I just love to shop and cannot resist girl’s clothes!

2) Can you give us an example of what an average day for you is like?

With an older family like mine, I have the luxury of starting my day late in the morning and working on the computer late into the evening, which are hours that suit my personality. EBay works perfect for this schedule.

The morning is usually a tad of housework and then I check my auctions and email. I go to the Post Office after that almost every day because it is very close to home and I am committed to shipping as soon as I receive payment. I normally have some shopping to do after that to keep the business going!

The afternoon is a good time for picture taking, which I much prefer to do outdoors. I try to use as many bright, sunny days as we get — which are not many. Then I’m back on the computer transferring photos, creating listings and checking auctions while preparing supper.

My husband and both boys are musicians so there are many performances and school functions to attend in the evenings. Later at night I’m back at the computer closing auctions and doing more listing. I try to maintain a constant presence on eBay. The exception is this month, wouldn’t you know, because sales are slowing down and things at home require more attention in preparation for the holidays.

My weekends are not as intense on eBay because I don’t have auctions end on Friday or Saturday. I use that time to do more work around the house and prepare to list the next week.

3) What is your favorite part of selling on eBay?

Without a doubt, it is wonderful to interact with so many nice people on eBay. However, in all honesty I think my favorite part is being able to justify all the shopping I like to do and call it “business”. There’s nothing like doing what you love!

4) We all love bidding wars on our auctions…..can you tell us what your highest profit auction was, and the price it ended at?

Some of the first items in my eBay career were the highest interest and highest profit items. Understandably, when you have two GI Joes from 1958 in original boxes with outfits in mint condition, there is a lot of eBay interest! These items went in the $300 range and it was all profit because they belonged to my husband.

5) Looking back, what is the biggest mistake you've made? Can you share how a beginner can avoid making the same mistake?

Probably the biggest mistake I made, and continue to battle with, is keeping a balance between home and eBay. I tend to be a workaholic and could easily allow eBay to become all-consuming. Keeping eBay in perspective and within a certain time frame is important in order for it to be a long-lasting activity, and not irritate family members.

6) So let’s see, you’ve been selling on eBay for 2 years……wow! We would love to hear one of your secrets to success. Do you mind sharing a little “nugget” to leave us with us today?

I think templates have become more and more important in the eBay business. I have had my own template design for just a few months and have received many compliments on it and inquiries about it. Along with good photos, an individualized eBay template lends a real business quality to your listings and a strong identity that buyers seem to respond to. The relatively small price of a unique template (or a few) is well worth the money.

*Note here from Sherah: There is an excellent resource for templates by SellerSourceBook. See the end of the newsletter.

Sherah: "I really appreciate you taking the time to be with us today, Diane! It has been fun getting to know you, and seeing Ebay through another mom's eyes. Good success to you!"

Diane: "Thanks for featuring me, and Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all!"

Play clothes can make money too!

One of my readers emailed this question to me:

*******************************************************
“How do you feel about selling big lots of play clothes? I have 2 big tubs of good clothes and then I have 2 more tubs of play clothes that I would probably sell for .50 to 1.00 each at a Garage sale. I'm thinking of listing them in big lots, I HATE having garage sales :) Not to mention, my garage is too much of a mess!”
*******************************************************

Play clothes actually do have a market, although fairly small. There aren’t many auctions on eBay for play clothes, but I did find some auctions that made a nice little profit for clothes that otherwise would’ve gone to charity.

It’s best to sell them in lots of as many pieces as possible, and all the same size. Here are some examples of what has sold recently.

Girls:
24 2T 18 pcs Play Lot Shirts Leggings Jeans + ($21.50)

Boys:
KITESTRINGS PLAY LOT OF 10 NICE 4 4T ($20.51)

Infants:
31PC GIRLS PLAY LOT 12-24M! GAP,OLDNAVY,OSH K ($20.50)

The key here is to be absolutely honest with the condition of the clothes. It would be a huge pain to sell a big lot, and then have the buyer send it back because they felt it was not represented correctly. Just state that some have stains, some have fade, but overall they are in great play condition, or revise it according to the condition of your clothes.

One great way to attract bidders to your particular auction of play clothes is to include one or two brand names that are often searched for. Such as Gymboree, Baby Gap, etc. Be sure to include the “+” sign after these search words (like Gymboree, Baby Gap +” so the bidder knows there are other name brands, and the lot isn’t completely made up of Gymboree and Baby Gap.

Why not get $15-$20 for play clothes? Try it and see how it goes! Any amount is better than nothing. =)

This Week’s HOT Auction:

NWT Gymboree BON VOYAGE kitty print pants M 4

The seller writes:

Hi Sherah!

When I saw the email you included in the last issue about the Thomas the Tank Engine outfits, I thought I'd email to add my sale. Gymboree's Bon Voyage line has been very big lately.

I found a pair of the light blue kitty print pants at Ross for around $5-$7 (I buy a lot there so I forget the exact amount). I had them at $13 or $14 and a friend suggested I raise the price because of how popular they are. I raised it to $18 and low and behold they sold with a BIN! (Buy it now). I was so surprised! Just thought I'd mention it.

Five Most Popular Gymboree Search Words, in this order:

1. Gymboree XXL
2. Gymboree XL
3. Gymboree NWT
4. Gymboree Sweet Romance
5. Gymboree Blanket

These are the most popular search words on ebay right now for Gymboree. This information lets you know what your bidders are most interested in buying this week.

Do you let store clerks know you're buying to resell on Ebay?

2 (5%) Yes, I am always open about why I am buying so much.
6 (10%) MAYBE ~ depending on what store it is.
45 (85%) No, I don't feel it is any of their business.

Here’s an interesting comment from a reader on this subject:

I have a funny story - but it wasn't so funny at the time and could actually be taken as a warning to those selling children's clothing on ebay. I am a Baby Gap fanatic and was in the store one day buying some of their clearance.

When I got up to the counter I had a pile of things, and struck up a conversation with the woman ringing me up. She laughed about how much stuff I was getting - all in different sizes of course – and I nonchalantly mentioned ebay. Immediately she grabbed the merchandise from me and refused to sell it to me - even after I said I was kidding.

So, lesson for the day is - don't ever mention you will be selling something on ebay; the salesperson just may refuse your business!
